Snow Storm December 5 - 7, 2003

So it started snowing about midnight Friday the 5th of December.  I decided to work from home that day,
but Jen went in.  By the time she came home (6pm) we had around 8" of heavy wet snow. This picture was
taken saturday morning, so we got at least another 2" after she got home.  The road in front of our house
wasn't really plowed until saturday afternoon, though it was still covered with snow and ice this morning
(12/8/03).

Snow falling Friday evening.

Here's snow on the railing on the steps on the side of our house. For reference the railing is a 1" x 6".

Looking over the railing to the woods behind our house.

We got the birdfeeder up just in time for the storm. We had our very own bird metropolis by Sunday
afternoon.  We had nuthatches, downie woodpeckers, red belly woodpeckers, chicadees, juncos, titmice,
doves, crows, wrens cardinals and of course a few blue jays.  When it snows, the wildlife in the woods
behind our place is easier to see. We saw a lot of deer and a few fox running on the bank on the other side.

Oh yeah, we had a few squirrels too, though their days are numbered.  We're getting hot pepper powder to
put in the seed. That should be fun to watch.

CJ resting after an afternoon of hiking/playing in the snow.  That's when I should have had the camera. The
woods and stream behind our house were absolutely gorgous with the fresh fallen snow, but what isn't
gorgous after a fresh fallen snow?

Jen was trying to tell Jeff and I the house was cold. She's always making fun of me for wearing my hat
around the house. I think now she understands.  When we could finally go out on sunday, I picked up some
plastic insulating wrap for the windows.  When I finally buy my own house, everyone will have to come by
and check out my windows.  I swear I'll have the best insulated windows on the market.  It seems like I've
been wrapping windows for the last 10 years of my life.

Here's Jeff trying to figure out how they get the plastic to look so clear and smooth in the pictures on the
box. We concluded windows in the pictures on the box don't have plastic on them.  It's a hoax. You can't do it
without some kind of wrinkle.  Though after all these years, we are getting pretty close.

With the windows wrapped, jen still needs a blanket, hood and the dog to keep warm.

When people first find out we don't have TV (we have a tv, you can see it in the room behind me, but we don't
have cable) they ask, "what do you do with all your time?"  Usually it's not a problem.  We're at the gym, on
a ride, washing dishes, cooking, working on bikes, etc.  When you're snowed in for 3 days, you get through
the normal routine pretty quick.  As you see here, I was left with combing the dog.  Not brushing, which is
quicker and easier, but combing. Actually he needed a combing.  He has fur within his fur that the brush just
wasn't getting too. I should have taken a picture of the melon size wad of fur I combed out just from his neck.

Here's some icicles growing on the front of our house.  Those are standard windows for size reference. I'm
hoping the ones off the front porch reach the ground before it all melts away.

Granted we only got around 8" of snow, so it wasn't like we were stranded and there wasn't a state of
emergency.  But it was the first snow of the season, and a nice one at that.
